We stayed at the Gaylord Hotel in Kissimmee since last Thursday until tonight for the Florida FPEA Homeschool Convention. Gaylord is a very fantastic hotel divided into three different parts of what makes Florida famous and great, and shows great diversity in landscape and environment.

In the Everglade section there is a baby Alligator exhibit. The trainers from Gatorland come to the hotel and feed the baby alligators three times a week. In nature, they do not need to eat as much. In fact, Alligators only need to eat six to seven times a year.

What is really interesting about this show is that the baby and the adult turtles soak up the sun right along with the Alligators.

In fact, they sleep on each other. The alligators are not hungry so they do not bother the turtles they share their habitat with here. In nature, however, this would not be the case. These baby alligators will not go wild. As they get bigger, they will go to Gatorland.

This is because humans feed the Alligators.

You will never feed a wild Alligator.

Feeding wild alligators is against the law here in Florida. Never foot Alligators. They lose their fear of people when you feed them. Their brains are the size of lima beans, and they are purely instinctive. Do not use their brains to determine if you are food or not. We are their natural enemy and we want to keep it that way! Tragedies involving alligators that have been fed are in the news. They have eaten pet dogs and children. Not only that, you just invite the Alligator to be killed because a threatening Alligator gets shot. As homes are built closer to the Everglades, there have been instances where Alligator has made its way up a canal and into the residents' swimming pool.

Never trust an Alligator. Never assume you become friends with an Alligator.

Florida Alligators grow about a foot a year while young and will in most cases grow to 6 to 12 feet. The largest Florida Alligator found was over 17 feet long.

All Florida waters from lakes to canals and rivers have alligators. There are no exceptions to this statement. Now, there are many brave souls like Broker Bryant who want to swim in the lakes, but that's not something I will ever do.

Once upon a time, the Florida Alligator was on the brink of the extension. But Alligator protection laws were introduced and now there are over 1 million Alligators in the state of Florida with a population of 17 million.

If you see an Alligator in your backyard or in a nearby canal, the best thing to do is to leave it alone, go inside, stay inside and wait for the Alligator to leave. If you think he's over 7 feet tall, you can call the wildlife department, but just know that they don't usually come out to take Alligator away if he's less than 7 feet.
